The islands are actually the tops of an underwater mountain range and there are 21 of them. It has a rich history having at one time or another been controlled by the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Spanish, and finally by the nation of Brazil itself. During World War II it was the site of a prison. Today it is primarily tourism that keeps the isolated area alive.
