The Missouri River is a very important river to the United States of America. The Missouri River is more than 2,500 miles in length and about 1/6th of the water in North America drains through it. It starts in Montana and empties into the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri. The route of the Missouri was largely followed by Lewis and Clark as they explored the newly acquired Northwest Territory on their way to the Pacific Ocean. At the headwaters of the Missouri River is Missouri River Headwaters State Park and as the river flows it passes many important cities including: Great Falls (Montana), Bismarck (North Dakota), Pierre (South Dakota), Council Bluffs (Iowa), Sioux City (Iowa), Omaha (Nebraska), Independence (Missouri), Kansas City (Missouri), and more.
