One of the more interesting camera type things put on the internet recently is Google’s “street view“. Google has sent vehicles out to a large number of places and taken video of the streets as they drive by. A really interesting and somewhat exciting idea. The uses for this feature are almost limitless, you can see your old neighborhood, you can see where you plan on going for a vacation, and more. One of the funniest things that has happened is that sometimes the Google video truck has driven by unusual things that are happening alongside the road. Check this one out:

Helicopter On The Highway – You Don’t See That Every Day

Here’s something you don’t see every day sitting on a highway.

During avalanche control in mountain passes, helicopters are sometimes used to drop explosive charges down into avalanche chutes. Once the explosives go off, the snow comes down onto the road and can be removed by the snow removal personnel. This is preferred to just letting the snow come down on its own when there could be traffic passing by underneath.

Stevens Pass In Washington State – Winter Driving

Sometimes it is better to just stay at home. Look at the winter driving conditions from earlier today on Stevens Pass, one of the major east-west routes across the Cascade Mountains in Washington State.

Most backups like this are caused by extra congestion on the roads combined with the weather. That, and people not being prepared for winter driving conditions or driving too fast. There are many reasons for traffic accidents, most are due to driver error and can be avoided. Whether you are in winter driving mode, or a more wide open care free summer driving mode, be careful and know that the unexpected can always happen. Being aware of your surroundings, other drivers or natural landscape, can go a long ways in keeping you safe on the nation’s road system.

Hillsides can give way, especially after a lot of moisture has loosed the earth that is holding the rock in place… or, it could just be gravity is finally winning it’s battle with that rock outcropping.

Whatever the situation, it can usually be conquered by being aware of your surroundings and traveling at a safe speed.

I-5 Underwater

This picture shows Interstate 5 between Seattle and Portland underwater after the severe flooding that happened in December of 2007. It’s hard to believe that underneath all that water is one of the most traveled freeways on the west coast.
