There are a number of causes to accidents like the one above and they happen every day. One cause though that people need to be wary of doing themselves is referred to as rubbernecking. Rubbernecking is the act of taking your eyes off the road to look at something alongside or in the other lanes. This can involve slowing down to look at a traffic accident or also looking off road to a scenic location like a lake, river or rock formation. While most drivers have the skill to be able to glance at something without having it affect their driving too much, many people take their eyes off the road for way too long. This can cause them to rear-end the vehicle in front of them or even drift into the oncoming lane. Common sense and history both tell us to not take part in the every day sport of rubbernecking.
