A unique webcam available to check out is the webcam at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.  It is also a bit ironic to be looking at a webcam that shows images of a facility that peers into space.  Kind of like looking at a video camera screen while you’re filming a television set.

Alabama’s Traffic Camera network, run by the State of Alabama, appears to be a pretty up-to-date and modern system.  The camera placement is generally along the most traveled routes, with views in both directions for most places.  There are currently very few cameras in the outlying areas, meaning that if you’re traveling off the beaten path there won’t be much chance to check out the road conditions or landscape ahead of time.

Today’s featured webcam shows Lake Geneva taken from Aurora College in Wisconsin.  This is a live streaming camera and you can see the waves come in and hit the pier.  You can also see students walking towards and away from the camera as they enter and exit the building.  A very nice look at life here at the waters edge.

Some of the best webcams available are the ones that give you a view of life in another area. A perfect example is the town square cam for Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Viewing this webcam you can make out part of the downtown area, where every day people stroll along doing their daily business. Stopping in at the drug store, the hardware store, or maybe a little cafe. Tourists patronizing the Outfitters store on their way up into the surrounding hills for a weekend away from the big city.

The surrounding hillsides are green and sparsely covered with pine trees. They look close enough to hike to from town, but it’s probably farther than it appears.

The focal point of the camera is the town park with it’s huge archway that appears to be made of antlers. Imagine the local celebrations and get-togethers that take place in this little park. Who knows, there could be pie-eating contests, barbecues, pancake breakfasts, and a whole lot more.

Jeff Lilly Restorations has an online gallery of their street rods that they’ve restored. Some of these pictures have to be seen to be believed. Photos of classic cars like Corvettes, Chevelles, and even rarely seen vehicles like a 1929 school bus (in the pre-war section of the gallery) are sure to please every auto enthusiast. They’ve done beautiful work on cars from almost every era. Their main purpose being online is to promote their car restoration business (like the beautiful corvette restoration they’ve done), but that doesn’t mean you can’t go there and just drool over the photos of the cars they’ve restored.

The State of Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles is doing their best to battle insomnia at home. Insomnia affects millions of people, nothing works to get you to sleep - medication, counting sheep, reading… but now, there’s this.

That’s right… you can watch the waiting area at the Fairbanks DMV office. How nice of a state agency to take that much concern in the well being of the non-sleeping public. We’re not sure if this camera is 24 hours a day or not, an empty black room might be a little too much for the public to handle.

As far as traffic camera development goes, the State of Alaska is right up there with the best of them.  Though Alaska is looked at as the rugged undeveloped area of the world, the state has embraced modern technology and put a great many resources behind it’s traffic camera network.

There are urban cameras in the Juneau and Anchorage area and also cameras in the more isolated stretches of roadway too.  The importance of traffic cameras to the public cannot be overstated in a place like Alaska where the weather varies so much from day to day.  Knowing the road conditions ahead of you on any commute is important, but when the roads you’ll be driving on are semi-remote with little help around if something goes wrong, then the stakes are raised a little bit.
